Serving People Saving Animals

The motto of the Virginia Federation of Humane Societies is “Serving People Saving Animals,” and this really defines who our membership is. When VFHS was founded in 1959, it was created as an umbrella organization for humane societies in Virginia. Since that time, the animal welfare movement has seen a growth of organizations devoted to promoting the humane treatment of animals, solving the pet overpopulation problem, and preventing animal cruelty. There is a place for all of those voices within VFHS; while there usually is no one way to be “right” and there may be differences of opinion, we often find that our areas of agreement are much greater than our areas of disagreement.

VFHS welcomes everyone who wants to be part of the dialog and part of the solution: certainly humane societies and shelters, but also rescue groups, sanctuaries, animal control officers, veterinarians, spay/neuter clinics, and other individuals who care about animals. Over time, we look forward to sharing blog entries not only about VFHS but about our members and how they have made a difference for animals in their communities. So in addition to stopping by to read our blog, please consider joining VFHS–and maybe one of these next blog entries will be about you.
